Derek Morris

Born 1940 Birmingham into a creative family : father a craftsman/sculptor, mother an embroidress, sister a jeweller. Studied Newcastle University 1958-63, Chelsea School of Art 1963-64 MA Fine Art. Head of Sculpture, Norwich School of Art & Design 1971-90. Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and its President 1998-2004. Lives and works in Norfolk, UK.

Derek says of his work : Days spent in my father’s workshop as a child initiated me into the mysteries of casting shapes – the hollow (empty) mould filled with the solid material, the space becoming an echo of the shape and vice versa.

I have been concerned with this intriguing state of affairs all my working life. Recently, I have deliberately reduced my catalogue of forms to simple geometry, implicated as it is in the structural underpinning of all matter, so a common and universal language. The fall of light on forms is the means by which we understand them. I am researching the introduction of integral light sources into my sculptures in order to amplify the essential qualities of shapes and to establish the possibility of illusion. A new and exciting journey.
